Technician exam-day checklist
A one-page checklist for the US amateur radio Technician exam on the 2026-2030 question pool, with a study log. Print it or save it as PDF from your browser.
The exam in three facts
- The Technician license needs one written exam, Element 2.
- It has 35 multiple-choice questions; 26 correct answers pass (47 CFR 97.503(a)).
- Questions come from the Technician pool valid from July 1, 2026 until June 30, 2030. Study from material for this pool. Morse code is not required.
Two weeks before
- Find an exam session (in person or online) through a Volunteer Examiner team and book it.
- Get an FCC Registration Number (FRN) in the FCC's CORES system, if the session asks you to bring one.
- Ask the session what to bring and how to pay their exam fee.
- Take full practice exams on the 2026-2030 pool until you pass them with room to spare.
On exam day
- Photo ID and your FRN.
- Anything the session asked for (calculator rules differ: ask first).
- Read every answer option before you choose; skip and come back to hard ones.
After you pass
- The examiners file your result; the FCC e-mails you about the application fee and then the license.
- Your callsign appears in the FCC license database once the license is granted. You may transmit only after that.
- Plan your first contact: find a local repeater and listen first.
